Sweet Potato Casserole
This Sweet Potato Casserole is sure to be a hit at your next holiday gathering! It’s packed with flavor and super easy to make.
The Secret? BAKING, Not Boiling!
The most important step in this recipe is baking the sweet potatoes. I know boiling might seem more convenient, but trust me you’ll lose all the natural sweetness that makes sweet potatoes so delicious. Baking takes a little longer, but it’s well worth the wait!
How to Bake the Sweet Potatoes:
1. Wash the sweet potatoes and place them on a baking sheet.
2. Pierce each potato with a fork.
3. Bake at 400°F for about 1 to 1.5 hours, flipping them after 45 minutes.
4. You’ll know they’re done when they’re tender all the way through.
Once they’re ready, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly. Separate the skin from the flesh and add the sweet potato flesh to a large mixing bowl.
Time to Mash and Mix:
Add the following ingredients to the sweet potatoes:
• Vanilla extract
• Butter
• Brown sugar (to taste)
• Nutmeg
• Cinnamon
• Sweetened condensed milk
I like to mash and mix everything by hand for a chunkier texture, but if you prefer it smooth, feel free to use a mixer.
Taste Test and Adjust:
Here’s the fun part, taste it! If it needs more sweetness, add a little more brown sugar. Craving more spice? Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg. Adjust until it’s just right for your taste buds.
Assembly and Baking:
1. Transfer the sweet potato mixture into a baking dish.
2. Prepare the crumble topping and sprinkle it evenly over the top.
3. Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.
Serve warm and enjoy every delicious bite!
