Ditch the Niche
To have a niche or not? That’s the question.
For the longest time, I felt like I had to pick just one focus area for my life: being a nanny. Period. The end. As if announcing any other interests would somehow distract the universe from my professional identity.
It didn’t help that impostor syndrome decided to crash the party. Just when I’d get excited about writing or exploring new hobbies, that little voice in my head would say, “Oh, you think you can do that? But you’re a nanny. What do you know about Cycling?” Needless to say, I got pretty good at procrastination.
But here’s the thing: we’re allowed to have more than one interest.
We need freedom to explore and to show up as our multifaceted selves.
So if you’ve been holding yourself back, like I did because you think you must only talk about one thing or fear you’ll look like an impostor, know this: you can be a nanny who bakes pies, practices yoga, and writes novels on the weekends. You can be a project manager who dj’s. You can be a pilot who teaches tennis lessons.
Let’s let our different interests collide, sparkle, and evolve as we go. Impostor syndrome might tag along, but it’s easier to ignore when you’re genuinely having fun. After all, life is way too short to cram yourself into a single category.
Break free, be multi-passionate, and if you burn a few dinners (or pick up a random hobby you never master) in the process, at least you’ll have a great story to tell later.
Happy exploring! And if anyone asks, I’m not just a nanny. Yes, I’m an absolutely amazing nanny who loves what I do, but I’m also an ever-evolving person with so many passions. I love cycling, weightlifting, cooking, writing, traveling, and so much more. It’s time we get out of my head and start sharing those parts of ourselves more. Because who says you have to pick one thing?
Life’s too short not to embrace everything that lights you up. Maybe by sharing, we’ll inspire each other to celebrate all the wonderful, seemingly random things that make us who you are.
